Dr. Aaron Poynton is a senior executive and global strategic leader with decades of experience at the intersection of artificial intelligence, global institutions, and highly regulated, mission-critical environments. He is an executive with Applied General Intelligence (AGI), working on next-generation AI systems grounded in coherence and reasoning for high-reliability applications, and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the American Society for AI, a nonprofit organization convening leaders from government, industry, academia, and civil society to shape long-term AI governance.
Known for aligning resources, inspiring teams, and driving results amid complexity and uncertainty, Dr. Poynton has led institutions with more than 5,000 employees, managed global sales organizations within Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies, and founded ventures with a record of scaling organizations for sustained success. His leadership spans energy, defense, consulting, biotechnology, and international initiatives in advanced technology and global security.
He serves on the Board of the United Nations Association and previously chaired the United Nations’ 80th Anniversary Gala. A best-selling author, entrepreneur, and former U.S. Army officer, Dr. Poynton brings a global perspective shaped by cross-border operations and high-stakes leadership. He holds advanced degrees in law, business, economics, political science, and executive leadership from Harvard Business School, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, the London School of Economics, the University System of Maryland, and George Washington University.

He serves as Executive Director of the American Society for AI, sits on the Board of the United Nations Association in Washington, D.C., and was nominated to the Fulbright Specialist Program. He previously led a public board of education serving nearly 40,000 students and served as President of the Harvard Business School AMP Foundation, expanding STEM opportunities for underprivileged students.

Aaron brings a global perspective shaped by decades of cross-border leadership and commercial execution. He has led global sales organizations, worked in more than 50 countries, and transacted across jurisdictions. While serving as President of the USA Africa Business Council, he was the original architect of the 2025 Democratic Republic of the Congo Peace Deal.
